LUNDYN

I tried to do everything in my power to distance myself from Maverick Strong; Even putting some miles between us by moving across country. Yet, here I find myself back where I started from - in my hometown and too close to Maverick. This time there will be no running away. This time I am finally putting an end to this vendetta.

MAVERICK

Trying to forget her was like trying to avoid a head-on collision with a semi truck - it just wasn’t happenin’. My little sister’s best friend and my enemy since sophomore year. Our hate is mutual and a must - it’s also fun. When Lundyn moves back home after leaving town the day after … Ah, I’m getting ahead of myself. Either way, the hate is still strong and if hating isn’t right, I don’t want to be wrong.

Needing a break from the vocabulary volcano erupting from Eric’s mouth, I excuse myself and go to the restroom.

Once there, I spend one minute lightly banging my head against the stall door and then exit to spend another two staring at myself absentmindedly in the dirty mirror as I blow my cheeks out like a blowfish. I dare not text Harlow about how bad this date is going because she would just tell me I am a Ridiculous Rhonda or some shit. Before I exit, I grab a paper towel and use it to open the door. I thrust my foot out when it swings open to hold it there while I discard the paper towel. The boisterous restaurant grows louder as I emerge down the dimly lit narrow hallway until I am halted by a wall of steel. A wall of steel that smells of vanilla with just a hint of pine.

“Well, if you wanted a hug Lundy, all you had to do was ask,” Maverick says as he smiles down at me with his perfect teeth, and equally perfect twinkling set of hazel eyes. He blows out a small breath, and I catch a whiff of the beer he’s been drinking.

“Ugggh Maverick, don’t you have someone to arrest or something?” My eyes shift attempting not to get sucked into his orbit. It’s like he’s a male Medusa, if I look I might turn to stone.

“My day off, and why would I want to leave the show you’re putting on for us?” His brows bounce twice.

My eyes roll to the ceiling as I cross my arms over my chest. “What show Maverick?” I breathe out unamused by his banter.

He jerks his head back and to the left. “That disastrous date you’re on with that pussy sitting out there.” Apparently, this statement tickles his small mind, and he chuckles to himself. He has a point, but I would never agree with him.

“He’s not a pussy, Maverick. You might actually learn some manners from him.”

“HA! Lundy, now I’m no gynecologist, but I know a pussy when I see one.” His nose wrinkles causing his mouth resembles a bunny as he begins to sniff the air.

“What are you doing?” I ask through gritted teeth.

“Yep, I smell his pussy-ness from here.” A shit eating grin gradually appears on his face.

I tuck my lips tuck between my teeth as my head shakes with disappointment at Maverick. Seriously, this dude isn’t right in the head, and I if I stay around his crazy much longer I might become equally insane. “I’m done with this conversation.” I take one step to the right, and Maverick moves to block me.

“What the fuck, Maverick? Move.” I step to the left, and he blocks me again. This time stretching his hands out to grab the door frame, displaying his solid mass of human perfection. The t-shirt he is wearing hugs every tensed, perfectly sculpted muscle for dear life.

He waggles his brows and his mouth pulled into an amused smile. “Nope, as an officer of the law I cannot allow you to subject yourself to any more of that guy’s pussy-ness today.”

“You’re incorrigible you know that?”

He shrugs, his face falling unreadable as he contemplates his answer. “I’ve been called worse.”

An unspoken dual initiates in this dimly lit hallway as our gazes challenge each other. Each of us carefully calculating our next move. I get on my tip toes to where my nose is leveled with his jaw line and lean in toward his ear. I hear the slow inhale as he takes in the scent of my coconut shampoo.

“Careful Maverick, we vampires like to bite in the dark.” I open my mouth to make a chomping noise with my teeth to drive my threat home. I guess I misjudged the close proximity of my mouth to his ear, because when I bite down, I have a mouth full of Maverick’s earlobe between my teeth. The salty taste of his blood oozes through my teeth and then invades my mouth. My eyes go wide as Maverick’s scream fills the empty hallway, luckily they are muffled by the rowdy patrons.

He pulls back, eyes full of shock, his hand cupping his left ear which is dripping blood. “Holy shit, you Mike Tyson’d me!”

My hands cover my face as I stare on in horror. Not at Maverick having a hissy fit, but of Eric as I catch him watching on with a look of disgust tinged with a hint of horror before he turns and quickly exits the restaurant.

My fingers tap across my chest as I wait for Monica to finish stirring the wax. I am not by any means prude, but having my legs spread eagle waiting for hot wax to be applied just isn’t my definition of a good time.

“You nervous?”

“Just a little,” I admit.

“Promise you there’s no need, the first strip might be a surprise but after that, it’s smooth sailing.” Her words are meant to be assuring but fall short of easing any nervousness.

“Okay, since you promised and all,” I say to the ceiling, silently praying Monica’s fingers aren’t crossed.

A small gasp escapes as the gooey warm wax is generously spread over the top triangle of my va-jay-jay. Ok, I can do this, not bad.

Her cherub face appears over me. “How you doing, Lundyn?”

“Not too shabby, Monica.” I even give her a thumbs up. My confidence in the woman has risen about five notches. She’s knocking this out the park, and to think I was threatening to tit punch Harlow over this. I can be such a drama queen at times. Like I’m thinking I can get this done every two weeks or so.

And then…

Ripppppppp!

My eyes bulge out of my head, and my knuckles turn ashen as I dig my fingers into the soft cushion of the table. When my brain finally registers what just happened, a scream of death escapes my mouth.

“What the fuck Monica?” I yell as she rips the other strip, holy mother of pearl, she still has one more to go. Jesus take the wheel. Dear Lord, I need you now. I am being ripped to shreds by this polka dot dressed demon named Monica.

Ripppppppp!

Another blood-curdling scream and this time I curse Harlow and all her bright fucking ideas. Sweat beads form on my brow, and I have no other option but to breathe like I am in Lamaze class.

“You ok?”

What the fuck does she mean am I ok? Did she not hear my cries for help, is she insane? Before I can respond, I feel more warm wax added to the center part of my now tormented va-jay-jay.

Two more rounds of rips and screams come and then she heads to my butt crack. Monica and my relationship is on the rocks right now, like seriously it’s her, not me.

“Hang in there, Lundyn this is our last part, and it’s the easiest,” she giggles before saying, “I promise.”

She’s such a little lying bitch.

“What I need you to do is grab your knees to your chest, so your bottom is spread for me.”

This is just…ugghhhh. Reluctantly I oblige, I mean I’ve gone this far, might as well be bald as a fucking eagle on my ass, too. Once again, she applies a thick layer of warm wax to both sides of my butt crack.

“Now, I’m going to need you to relax as I pull these strips off. Okay?”

“Yeah, yeah, got it, relax.” I regulate my breathing while giving myself a mental pep talk.

She tugs a little at the bottom of the strip, and it catches a piece of hair. I panic, I fucking panic and clench. And in the midst of this clenching, I adhere my ass cheeks together.

“Oh my, Lundyn I told you to relax,” she chastises loudly.

“I’m sorry. I got nervous Monica.”

“Well, you’re going to have to wait just a minute. I have to grab some scissors.” She starts to walk past me, but I grab her arm.

“Scissors for what?” Jesus Christ, what have I done that warrants scissors? I am full out sweating in places I shouldn’t be. Harlow is getting punched so fucking hard when she least expects it for talking me into this bullshit.

Monica looks down at me with sympathetic brown eyes. “You’ve managed to adhere your cheeks together and unless I cut the wax off they are going to stay that way.”

A lone tear travels down the side of my face, and I nod my understanding as I nudge her arm. “Go now Monica, get the scissors so you can unclip my ass cheeks.” I whimper and shoo her out the door.

REVIEW
I liked the book.  I was not drawn in from the very beginning but I stuck with the book and enjoyed pieces of it.

Riley, bless her heart, has had it rough lately.  Her ex-husband, Aaron is a jerk who treated her like crap.  After finally coming to terms with the situation and realizing what needs to be done, she leaves him but falls into a depression.  She does not want to be around people and often avoids her family.

The only thing that keeps her going is her son three year old son, River.  River is a sweet little boy but has a speech delay.  Each week, River sees a speech therapists, but he does not like them.  After the last one quit, the agency decides to try again.  This time a male is sent to work with River.  Liam not only gets through to River and has him talking more than the others, but there is also an attraction between he and Riley.  Will Riley be able to open up and live again?

I did enjoy the story but there were parts that seemed redundant.  I understand why it was written that way, Riley needed it, she had never had it with her ex Aaron, and now she did with Liam.  When these two finally had sex, I honestly skimmed it.  I usually don't, but it was not a big part of this book for me.  Like I said, I enjoyed this book but it was one I could put down and come back to after a few days.  For that reason I will rate it 3.5

3.5  Stars

Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote this sweet little poem, that even if you’re not familiar with poetry you can more than likely recite.
“Tis Better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.”
You want to know something?
I hate this poem. Every time I see or hear it I have to choke back the bile that threatens to escape. It’s collection of strategically placed words are complete and utter bullshit which people cling to in order to help them deal with the aftermath of a shitty relationship. What this poem fails to explain is that in the process of you loving the wrong person, you can subject yourself to a lifetime of constant pain and misery. It neglects to advise that when you decide to let this love go, you are left with a plethora of jagged broken pieces that you must somehow find a way to piece back together; you have to become a seamstress and learn how to stitch your own heart until its whole again. You are left trying to figure out the why’s and how’s and what could have-been. Until finally one day that fragile limb you’ve been standing on breaks … causing you to fall into the unknown not knowing where to turn. The only thing you know is that you are alone.  Your thoughts of hopelessness and pain are the only company you keep, and no one, not even the one’s closest to you could possibly understand. Why, because they have chosen not to travel down the uncertain path of love. As for me, well my case was special, I loved an asshole so much that somewhere I unwillingly lost myself. I loved so hard that I was blinded by his untruths, none of this love I gave was reciprocated, and I paid the major price after I chose to disembark from his endless circle of disappointment. The price I paid was not in any monetary value, but my debt was settled by a journey I never wanted or asked to be a part of.  This is my journey back from the dark unforgiving tunnel we call grief; these are the 5 Stages of Riley Winters.
