Montgomery Bell craves adventure-the kind that knocks on your door and drags you out by your half-slept-on hair because it can't wait another second.

The problem is, she still lives thirty minutes away from where she grew up, in a college town obsessed with the one thing she hates: football.

It doesn't help that Montgomery wouldn't know the difference between an interception and a fumble if one hit her in the face.

When she meets Baron Richards, it practically does.

Baron is a rising star in the professional football world. Their worlds collide, sending Montgomery on the kind of adventure she never even thought to look for.

Finding love isn't the end of the story. You have to figure out what to do with it once you catch it, and run like hell to make that happen.

Don't worry, Montgomery's running...she just doesn't quite know which direction yet.

Mr. Sportsball is not your typical sports romance. It's a full-length, standalone novel that will have fans and anti-fans cheering for the same team.

Recommended for 18+ due to language and sexual content.

Andie just stands there, her eyes wide. I don't remember the last time I've seen her shell-shocked.

Baron's attractive, but we live in a college town. It's not like we're at a loss for attractive young guys around here. A new batch gets delivered every fall.

Baron stands up and takes a step toward me. He reaches into his back pocket and presses a napkin in front of me on the table. "I really hope you'll use this. I'd love to see you again."

I look down and see ten numbers scrawled across the white, Halftime-branded napkin. When I look back up, Baron is two steps away from the front door. I almost chase after him to clarify. Is this your phone number? Did you just ask me out?

Andie sits down across from me and starts hyperventilating. "What. Just. Happened?"

"What?" That's twice now in a matter of seconds that I feel like I'm missing something.

"Don't you know who that was?"

"Some guy at a bar? He said his name was Baron."

"Monty. That was Bear Richards." Andie's eyes are serious, but I swear she said the word “bear”—she can't be serious.

"What are you talking about? Who's Bear Richards? He said his name was Baron."

Andie sighs like she has to re-explain the quadratic equation to me.

"Baron 'Bear' Richards is one of the star players on Detroit's football team. He's a beast on the field and sex-on-a-friggin-goalpost off it, and he just gave you his number.”

Elliott finally looks back at me from his spot near the glass door that faces the marbled water. For someone who looks so put together, who comes off as confident and relaxed, there’s something tucked deep in there that’s broken. I wish I could fix it. I wish trying to fix it wasn’t such a risky proposition.

“I don’t think there was very much about what I did that was brave.” He shakes his head. “I just ran fast—from things, toward things—until I couldn’t any more, and now I’m here, crashing at my sister’s pool house.”

I never would have guessed that hidden under that easy bravado was shame, but it’s as clear as the crease between his eyebrows. I want to press my lips to that wrinkled sliver of skin, but life isn’t a fairytale. I can’t make his problems disappear with a kiss. Whatever they are, he’s going to have to work through them piece by piece.

I know a little something about that deep-in-the-trenches work. “It’s not as bad as the voice in your head is telling you it is.”

Elliott wraps his hand around the back of his neck and strains his head back with a deep exhale. “You don’t know that.”

I shake my head in disagreement. “Whatever it is, I know you’re a good person.”

Elliott’s eyebrow ticks up and his gaze intensifies. I feel like I might disintegrate.

“Even if I am, I don’t always do the right thing.” His voice is husky, and I get the feeling we’re not talking about the problems that led him here any more.

I blink quickly. Maybe I’m imagining it. “What makes you say that?”

“I think about you more than a good person should.”

My mouth goes completely dry. I’m not imagining it. I should run away from this conversation, like I’m the virgin in a horror film. They always get screwed—and not in a good way—but I’m drawn in. I can’t stop myself.

“You do?” It’s as much a confirmation as it is a question.

Elliott pushes off against the door frame and takes a step toward me, his hand still wrapped behind his head.

“Yeah, I do.” He swallows slowly. “I like you. A good person would walk away and leave you alone, but I’m two steps away from kissing you—and damn, I really want to.”

“Can I get you anything? Water, tea, soda?” I hear myself asking. Chalk it up to my automatic response system for houseguests. He might murder me with an ice pick in a second, but at least I offered him a beverage.

“I’ll have a Gatorade. I’m sure Sam keeps some stashed in there. Thanks.” Another point in his favor: Samantha totally does keep Gatorade in the fridge—it’s the only non-organic, high-sugar thing in there.

I walk over to the fridge and make the mistake of looking at Elliott on my way over. He’s smiling at me, and I notice he has a single dimple on his right cheek. It’s like the universe knew giving him two dimples would be unfair to the rest of us.

Ahh. I need to focus. “Okay, so how are you going to prove you’re really who you say you are? Do you happen to have a DNA test in your back pocket?”

And what fine pockets they are. His jeans are the perfect cross between hipster slim and boringly straight. He’s obviously well-acquainted with the inside of a gym because I can see the outline of his quads through the dark denim all the way from here.

Elliott’s eyes lock onto mine when I finally make it back up to his face. His eyebrows tick upward. Yup, I’m pretty sure he realizes I was just checking out his denim—and everything underneath it. I open the fridge door and stick my head in while my cheeks turn hot pink.
