Aly

I'm the princess, at least that's what my family believes. In their eyes, I can do no wrong. I was tired of trying to be perfect, so I left. I moved across the country and opened Illusions with my best friend. It's not your average upscale nightclub. What happens behind the scenes is where I get to go from princess to vixen. I never ran into any of the gentlemen that came into Illusions in the real world. Until him. Now, I'm in serious trouble. Not only is he a repeat customer, but he is my brother's best friend and business partner.

Cole

The stress of opening the new office finally got to me. I'd heard about Illusions, an upscale nightclub, in the middle of town. I went for more than a drink and found the one woman I can't get off my mind. I'd give anything to see her again. Turns out that isn't too unlikely. I didn't expect her to be my best friend and business partner's little sister. They call her the princess, but to me, she is my kitten.

“You want a kiss that makes you feel like you are flying?” I ask, speaking barely above a whisper.

“Uh huh,” she says.

“Explain.”

“I always thought that it would be the most romantic feeling to kiss among the clouds. Since I can’t fly, and I will never, and I mean never jump out of a plane, a kiss that felt like I was flying was as close as I was going to get,” she explains.

“How long have you wanted that?” I can’t help but smile. There is something about these innocent confessions that makes me want to be the romantic man that can give her what she wants.

“Since I was a little girl. When I was little, I would lay out in the backyard and look up at the clouds. One day, when I was laying out there, I saw two birds flying together and I thought it would be the most amazing feeling.” Sighing, she snuggles in closer to me.

Pulling up to Aly’s, I turn off the Nova and turn to face her. “What’s on your mind?”

“Why are you here?” she asks, looking down at her hands in her lap.

“I wasn’t ready for our time to be over,” I tell her the truth, because that is the only thing that I can think of.

“Did you mean what you said this morning? That this can’t continue?” She looks up at me. The look in her eyes stops my heart. Her eyes are shining bright with unshed tears.

Not wanting to lie, I go with the truth again. “Yes.”

She doesn’t say anything for a minute. She just sits there looking at me. With a small nod, she leans over, placing a kiss on my cheek. “Goodbye, Cole,” she says, and then she climbs out.

I want so badly to get out of the car and chase her. But at what cost? I know I can’t be anything more to her. I want to see her again, but it’s not fair to expect her to give up on what she wants, what she deserves. I can’t be selfish. Not with her. A few minutes later, the porch light shuts off. The loss of the light from her porch makes me feel cold. With the flip of that switch, it’s like she is shutting me out. Starting the car back up, I leave, not wanting to hang on to this day any longer than necessary, and I head back to the highway. It’s time to come back to reality.

“Hey.” He says, I swear that smile makes me want to agree to anything just to see it again.

“Hey.” I turn grabbing the seatbelt. Once it clicks he pulls back out of the parking lot and heads towards the highway.

“So…what did you need help with?” I ask. Unsure of where we are heading.

“Help?” his eyes quickly shift to me. He chuckles, before shifting his gaze back to the road.

“Yes, help. You said you needed my help with something.” I cross my arms over my chest and look at him expectantly.

“Oh, yeah. I lied.” He says with a shrug.

“You what?” He lied? Why the hell would he do that? Determined to find out, I ask him just that. “Why the hell did you lie?”

Snickering he looks at me again. “I knew you would come with me if you thought I needed help.” He says so simply, like it all makes sense with this as an explanation.

“Where are we going then?” I don’t even attempt to hide my annoyance.

“You’ll see.” He smirks. I’d really like to take that smirk off of his gorgeous face.

“I’ll see? That’s all I get?”

“Yeah. Now sit back, look pretty, and enjoy the ride.”

Scoffing, I turn to him again. “Sit back, look pretty, and enjoy the ride? Really? God, you’re such an asshole.”

“Just relax, Kitten.” He says.

"You lied so I would go with you, but now that I'm stuck in the truck with you, you won't tell me where we are going? You think I can really just relax and enjoy the ride?" I ask, quickly becoming more than annoyed.

He looks thoughtful for a moment, and I think just maybe he will realize how crazy this is and just tell me where we are going. But when he answers, I don't get the answer I was expecting. "That about sums it up, Kitten."

This is all so crazy, I can’t help it. I laugh. No, I don’t just laugh I full out cackle like a lunatic. I tell him what I think of his plan. "This is the stupidest idea ever!"

"Ah, but is it?” he questions, raising his eyebrow at me. “Are you not in the truck with me, going where I want to go?" He asks, clearly feeling proud.

"Only because you kidnapped me." I mumble. All too aware that I sound like a child.

Hemingway's Hope by J.C. Thompson

Title: Hemingway’s Hope

Author: J.C. Thompson

Release Date: March 7, 2016

Find on Goodreads

Hemingway has spent her life trying to earn love she was never going to get. Not capable of earning the love of her mom, she found what she thought was a lifelong love, until it wasn't. When she meets Max, the new drummer in her brothers' band, she just might find that love she has been searching her whole life for.

No stranger to pain and heartache. Max has learned from his past, that when you find someone worthy of your love, you give it all. Losing his mom at a young age showed him how fragile life is. He lives life with as few regrets as possible, and when he wants something he fights with all he has to get it.

Hemingway doesn't stand a chance against the force that is Max's love and devotion, not that she would want to.

Will Hemingway be able to move on from her past and open her heart up to love? Will Max be the one to show her the way? Or will they give up and move on when Hemingway is forced to confront her past head on?

“So what exactly happened between you two last night? Bec never came home.” Raising my eyebrow as I wait for an answer, everyone’s eyes snap over to where Becca is currently trying to put space between her and Jay. When I feel Max’s hands on my thighs, I look up at him.

“What?” I ask, trying to keep an innocent tone to my voice.

“That wasn’t very nice of you,” he says with a smirk. I can see the laughter dancing behind his eyes.

Looking back over to Jayden, since it appears neither of them are going to answer, I press on. “Looks like you moved Becca up your to-do list?” I try to keep a straight face, but it’s not easy, especially when I can hear Bodhi fighting back his laughter, and can feel Max’s chest shaking with silent laughter as he buries his face in my hair.

“Come on, Hem, you know that line was only for you.” Max stops laughing and his head shoots up. I’m a little afraid to turn around and see the look on his face, and from the satisfied look on Jayden’s face, I would guess that he successfully hit his mark.

“What do you mean that line is only for my sister?” Niki questions.

Unable to fight the laughter anymore, I tip my head back and let out a laugh from deep inside.

“The day I met Jay, he asked if I wanted to go somewhere and hangout.” Fighting back the laughter, I look over at Niki and Eli.

Shaking his head, Jay chuckles. “She said she was too busy to hang, so I look at her and deadpanned, ‘I was too, but I just moved you to the top of my to-do list.’ She slapped me.” This has all of the guys hooting in laughter. I look over at Jay, and he winks.
