She hid it well.

Now she could die.

When Bernadette—Birdie—Chapman and Beck Griffin meet in grief counseling they have an instant connection. For Birdie, it’s a comfort to share her feelings with someone who knows what she’s going through. For Beck, it’s an outlet, someone who understands his anger.

Citadel Executive Protection (CEP): New York City's top-rated security agency that hires and assigns only the best of the best for each case.

Psychologist Quinn McDonnell runs a practice on the Upper West Side in Manhattan, NY, specializing in adolescents.

Quinn's a no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is kind of woman who doesn't take a lot of crap from anybody. When she starts receiving threats from a man she believes is a former patient's brother, she finds herself entwined in an insidious web of deceit and betrayal.

Seeking the help of CEP, she finds herself once again involved with the handsome and broody Gunner Murphy, a man she butted heads with in Unbreakable Hearts (CEP #2), a man with whom she's now engaged in a dance of steamy flirtation as neither wants to admit their true feelings for the other.

Gunner is a former chopper pilot for the Army, having flown in a special ops regiment called the Night Stalkers, who has deep-seeded issues he thought he'd dealt with.

The race is on as Gunner enters into a game of cat and mouse as he tries to uncover the dark secrets of a sick and twisted mind to help keep Quinn alive. Can he overcome his own fears as he rushes to beat the clock to save her?

When I find out the hard-bodied, tattooed god from the gym lives down the hall from me you’d think I’d be thrilled, right?

Um, how about not.

Heath Noble, construction project manager, MMA fighter and resident hottie, seemed charming at first. But after introducing myself, it was all goodbye Mr. Nice Guy, hello Sir Jerkface.

I don’t know what his problem is but guys who look like him are usually jackholes anyway, so I’m out.

Except he won’t let me be out.

Now I'm sure he's hitting on me and I'm as confused as ever.

But I know people and I'm not fooled.

I've got to find out what his game is before the line between my suspicion and my attraction to him becomes blurred and I do something stupid like fall for him.

Because I’ve done stupid before and I’ve only ended up getting hurt.

~~

The minute I find out who Laney Kyle is I want her to pay for what the Kyles have put my family through.

I'm only here to get my brother out from under the Kyle's hold by fighting in an underground ring run by her family. And if I can take all the Kyles down while I'm at it, well, so much the better.

But I have to be smooth. And believe me, I’m all about being smooth.

Or so I thought.

She’s got me so tangled up I’m not sure what I’m doing anymore.

And by the time I realize she’s an innocent bystander, I know I’ve lost her.

Now I’m going to get her back.

But she’s not giving me the chance.

Two people plus one apartment building equals one big messy situation.

And love, as usual, will just make everything messier.

Welcome to the High Rise where tenants get a new lease on love...

Loch by Harper Bentley

Title: Loch (The Powers That Be #3)
Author: Harper Bentley
Release Date: Sept 30, 2015

Loch Powers was the hottest guy I’d ever seen in my entire life.

And I hated him with every fiber of my being.

I'd practically known him since birth. Heck, we’d literally shared a crib as babies at his mom’s daycare.

Then I’d crushed on him hard when we hit middle school but he wouldn’t give geeky, glasses-wearing me the time of day. When his mom made him take me to the sixth grade dance, he’d humiliated me and I vowed to never talk to him again.

The next year when my family moved away, I told myself that if I never saw him again it’d be too soon.

Now I’m back and attending the same college, but I’m no longer the skinny, ugly girl who was so infatuated with him. And I’m so over him it’s not even funny.

But now that I’m no longer the ugly duckling, he’s set his sights on me, and I’m just not sure what to do with that.

I have read Gable from the Powers That Be series and enjoyed it very much.  Loch was well written. Before writing this I looked on Goodreads and noticed that kawehi.reviews made a good point.  This isn't really a story about Loch but more of a story about Simone.  We are not given Loch's point of until the end.

Simone and Loch were very close when they were little.  They stayed in the same crib, playpen, played together as they got older, etc.  They were the best of friends.  Then an incident at a middle dance changes things along with Simone's family moving.

Fast forward to college.  Simone is back to her hometown, attending college, and rooming with her best friend Marcy.  Marcy tries to warn Simone about Loch and how hot he is now and to be prepared for if and when she runs into  him.  Low and behold, her first day she does run into Loch but he does not recognize her and plans a date.  When Simone is able to tell Marcy, a plan is hatched to seek revenge.  Turns out that not only had Loch been a jerk to Simone, he had also been a jerk to quite a few girls and Marcy thought of the sweetest revenge.  I have to say, this reminded of a movie.  If only I could recall the name of it.

Like I said before, this was Loch's story but I would have liked more of his point of view.  It was still a good story and I enjoyed it.  This is a story about second chances and making amends with one's past.
