EXCERPT:
After a lovely meal, I finally glance at my watch. “Well, slap my ass and call me Sally. We’ve been here almost three hours. Why did you let me stay that long, ya punk!” I finish off my very uncouth words with a playful swat to his arm.
Clearly, wine.
“Hey now, you know I’m technically your boss.”
I push his arm playfully again. “Ha! Yeah, good one.”
Chuckling, he says, “No, I’m serious. I’m sorry if it came across as a joke, but I was debating how to break the news to you since you obviously didn’t know.”
It feels like a pit is opening up in my stomach. "David, what's your last name?"
Clearing his throat, he looks me in the eye with a little uncertainty, probably worried about how I will react.
“Carrington.”
Thank you baby Jesus I don’t have more wine in my mouth or else I would’ve spit it all over the table.
“What? You’re telling me I just had a three hour dinner with the sole owner of Carrington Geographical Information Systems? A multi-billion dollar company?”
Looking a bit embarrassed, he humbly replies, “The one and only.”
Taking in a deep breath and opening my eyes wide, I process the new surprising information. “Okay, welp, that’s, uhm, quite interesting.” I slap my forehead. “Oh man...I’m such a jerk! I’ve been complaining about my little life when you probably have problems ten times larger and more important. Countries at the brink of war and God knows what else. Come on, let’s go. I don’t want to keep you any longer. Let’s go.”
I try to leave the table, but he reaches out and grasps my hand.
“Ris, stop. Don’t degrade yourself or your life. Everything of meaning to you deserves attention. I wanted to give you my attention so you could get some food in your system and unwind. It’s what I chose to do, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. It wasn’t a waste of time in any way, shape, or form, especially when we got to the kissing part.”
“I’ve not had that much wine, David. We didn’t kiss.”
He looks at me through his hooded, sexy eyes. “Not yet.”
The little tease.
Nodding, I reach over and touch his hand with my free hand. “Aside from all the kissing,”—I give him a hard eye roll—”I probably shouldn’t hold your hand like this either, being you’re my boss and all.”
Flipping his hand over, he gives mine a little squeeze. “You can hold my hand, or anything else you want for that matter, but I’m not going to go there. Yet. I like you, Ris. I have since the first moment I saw you. I’m going to be honest with you, here in the near future—the very near future—I’m going to do more than just pretend I kissed you. I’m going to ask you out and hope for more, like real kissing. I really want to tell you you’re going to say yes, but having a vague understanding of what you’ve been through...forcing your hand might not be the best approach right now.”
“Yeah, it might definitely get you kicked in the nuts.”
Making him laugh at my stupid jokes has been the highlight of the evening, so when he erupts in a full on belly laugh, I can’t help but smile back.
This feels so nice, so easy, so...right.
“I said you could hold anything, not kick. Keep it clean, little one.”
“Will do, boss.”
About Rae Daniel:
Thanks for visiting my site! I’m the one who would rather be reading or writing than doing basically anything else like sleeping, eating, drinking…well, I can drink at the same time actually. I’m a multi-tasker. Boxed wine actually…because I’m a classy b!tc4 like that. The only things that tear me away from writing and reading are my kids, the hubby, and my day job, but I have to say that about work so I don’t get fired. They don’t know that I read or write while I wait in between meetings, during meetings, on lunch breaks, in the restroom (Okay no, not then, that’s just gross). Basically anywhere I can.
